Glyphs is my all-time favorite font creation software. It's super intuitive and user-friendly, and still has everything you need to create simple or complex typefaces. Only bummer is it's just for Mac.
My first 20 or so fonts were made with FontSelf – it gave me the ability to get started without having to learn a whole new software. A plugin for Illustrator, just design your character set, then drag and drop into the plugin.
Unless I'm drawing on paper, all of my handwritten fonts are done in Procreate.
Can't have FontSelf without Illustrator! I also use Illustrator to vectorize my script and handwritten fonts before moving them over to Glyphs.
Some of my very favorite calligraphy pens. They have a little bit of a learning curve but are a lot of fun to use if you want to create serif forms on paper.
One of the best investments I made — creating handwritten fonts on an iPad is so much simpler than creating and scanning in handwritten forms.
